Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Program

The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Program offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, preparing students for careers in scientific research and teaching. The program deepens students’ understanding of biochemistry and molecular biology while strengthening their abilities in critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and independent research.

The curriculum provides a solid foundation in the field and offers flexibility to tailor coursework to each student’s academic interests and career goals. In addition to formal coursework, students engage in original research as part of their thesis or dissertation. Areas of specialization include molecular biology, physical biochemistry, plant biochemistry and molecular biology, signal transduction, metabolomics, and biomedical science.

Research is mentored by faculty in the Department of Biochemistry and affiliated departments across campus—including Bioengineering; Biomedical Sciences; Botany and Plant Sciences; Chemistry; Chemical and Environmental Engineering; Entomology; Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology; Microbiology and Plant Pathology; Molecular, Cell, and Systems Biology; Nematology; and Physics and Astronomy. This broad network fosters a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment. Students benefit from the resources and research excellence of a major university, combined with close faculty mentorship and a collaborative, student-centered atmosphere.

Graduates are well prepared for academic careers in research and teaching, as well as for research roles in government, industry, and private-sector laboratories.
